Fall 2008

Fall 2008 PD Offerings

Posting to the COE Web with the New KATE Tool:

Do you think Web publishing is complicated?  Web resources are loved by students and are effective for classroom instruction. The resources you post such as your Faculty Vitae is also one source of documentation for NCATE Standard 5.  You will learn everything you need to do to post your vitae, add a course and the syllabi that go with it, etc. The possibilities are limited only by your imagination.  You will post to your Faculty Page/create instructional pages for your courses, make hyperlinks, insert documents or pictures, etc.

Technology in the College of Education (Department Meetings):

Faculty members will review potential technology formats for faculty members and express needs for long-term planning for the College of Education. Formats discussed will include three models: faculty desktop and laptop, faculty desktop and laptop checkout, faculty docking station.

COE Technology for New Faculty Members (Assessment of Technology):
Faculty members will preview a new survey instrument that looks at competencies required by the Kentucky Program of Studies, the Kentucky Technology Teacher Standard and ISTE NETS. Faculty will provide feedback on modifications that need to be made to the survey instrument.
COE Technology for New Faculty Members (Resources):
Do you need some specific information about technology tools for COE faculty members? This session will be Part I of a general overview of technology in Alexander Hall.  You’ll learn how the MSU email accounts and COE email accounts are used including ways to merge the two.  We will access email accounts as well as COE/KATE web resources including mapped server drives.  We will discuss access to network printers as well as how to manage resources in the “social engineering era”. We hope to help you think about ways technology can help you effectively manage your time as well as stimulate high-level thinking in your education students.
Free Resources for Kentucky Teachers:
Participants will be introduced to KET Encyclomedia—Video Content licensed for Kentucky teachers. This service gives Kentucky schools (and university teacher educators) access to over 4,000 videos and 40,000 video segments, digital stills, clip art, and printed resources for instructional use at all levels.  Technology in Classrooms of Kentucky (TICK), a database of resources aligned to Kentucky curriculum and to technology standards will be demonstrated. In addition, logins will be created/provided for additional resources including the Kentucky Virtual Library.
Classroom Performance Systems (CPS/Clickers) --Creating Quizzes that have Immediate Feedback Options:
Do you want to get/give immediate feedback on student performance. It is quick and easy using classroom performance systems (“the clickers”) or online quiz sites. Bring some questions and we’ll look at some options and create a quiz that you can use.
Images and PhotoStory:
If you haven't seen this, you will love it. Your students will think you are a "real pro".  Learn to tips for taking better photos. Then turn them into a “professional” video. Photo Story 3 includes features that enable you to create a video slide show with your digital pictures, edit your pictures, create your story with original music, add narration, and share them with your students. It is free and easy. You and your students will be creating wonderful instructional resources.
Alexander Hall Classroom Technology (2nd Floor):
Are you ready to try something different/see something new? Or need a refresher? Do you need to know how to hook up your laptop?  Want to try the new remote Airliners that are in every classroom? Need more information on projecting a DVD? Want to try the new document cameras? We'll look at technology tools now available to make teaching easier (and fun too).
Alexander Hall Classroom Technology (1st Floor):
Are you ready to move beyond just taking students to the lab to work?  Are you familiar with the Sympodiums and how they differ from the interactive SMARTboards?  Want to try the new remote Airliners in the labs? Are you thinking of opportunities for using the Synchroneyes software that is available in the labs?  Using Synchroneyes, students can ask questions; teachers can give quizzes, share desktops, etc. Need more information? We'll look at technology tools now available to make teaching easier on the 1st Floor.
COE Technology for New Faculty Members (Technology Guidelines, Policies, Procedures, Standards, Resources):
Want to know what is expected of your graduates in terms of technology? Do you know what resources are available for you and the guidelines for their use?  This session will briefly overview the documents that contain the information you need.
COE Technology for New Faculty Members (Classroom and Checkout Technologies):

Want to know more about projectors, document cameras, SMART Boards, Airliners and how to use them in your classrooms? We'll provide hands-on experiences connecting and operating laptops and desktops with the classroom equipment. We will demonstrate and lead a discussion of teacher-created resources and new techniques for using the SMART Boards. In addition, you'll view the many checkout resources available to COE faculty.

Web 2.0 Tools/Google for Education

Google Session 1—Searching Plus:

GOOGLE:   What does that mean to you? Are you using it as a search engine and nothing more? Have you tried doing a “Scholarly”, a Book search, or a search of News Archives?  Google for Educators can open a whole new world for you. You can even create your own content-related search engine with the Google Custom Search Engine.

Google Session 2—Spatial Tools:

A variety of tools are available on Google to explore the earth.  Two popular tools are Google Maps (available for computer or mobile) and Google Earth.  Both interactive tools include interactivity and offer mapping technology that allows users to quickly navigate between satellite imagery, terrain maps, and street/traffic views. Visit the pyramids of Giza or follow the path of Lewis and Clark via Google Earth. Engage your students, grab their attention and send them on “lit” trips and other new adventures.

Google Session 3—Visual Tools:

Today's multimedia technologies can produce powerful and engaging instructional resources.  Attend this session to get simple and free ways to locate or create and distribute digital images and video.

Google Session 4—Productivity Tools:

Does technology change so fast that you have trouble staying “on top” of things? Do you even have trouble keeping track of a work calendar, a personal calendar, a family calendar? Are there just too many things to read, too much to do?  Try using Google Tools such as the Reader and Calendar to improve your productivity as well as your knowledge of what is happening in the technology world.

Google Session 5—Collaboration Tools:

Collaborate online in real-time with Google Docs and Spreadsheets or Presentations.  Never lose another document or fear the crashed computer.  Create or upload word processing and spreadsheet documents using these tools and have access to them anywhere anytime with a computer and internet connection.  Create and share a form to collect data.  Invite collaborators and be able to review revisions/history at any point. This is “real-time” access.

Google Session 6—Publication Tools:

If you want to create and share information, Google has several easy to use web publishing tools including IGoogle, Google Sites and Blogger.  IGoogle quickly creates a homepage. Google Sites is used to create a group website such as a class web page. Blogger is a powerful web tool that combines text, images and links.  Teachers can create commentary on a particular subject or they can have students “blog”.  All or one of these resources can be used as powerful communication tools for the classroom.
