Conflict Resolution
With violence in schools heading the news, ways to defuse violence have also become news. Conflict resolution supports peace in schools by teaching skills and processes for solving problems before they escalate to violence."
Folktales, Myths, and Legends
The world of literature includes many genres that have great value, but are sometimes overlooked. Folktales, myths, and legends are part of this secret treasure and hold many fascinating features that enhance written and spoken forms of literature. Come on a virtual journey that includes links to instructional resources, lesson plans, and actual texts of some of society's most famous fictional works!
Instructional Leadership
Many voices-including legislators (e.g., No Child Left Behind (NCLB), the Kentucky Education Reform Act (KERA)), political and business leaders, and, of course, parents-are demanding accountability and improved student achievement. The leadership role of school/district administrators has always been important, but the critically important task of moving achievement to very high levels is now bringing expanded leadership roles filled by teacher leaders such as technology resource teachers, content/curriculum specialists, etc. Leaders must expect and plan for learning to occur.
For leaders to provide the support and direction that is needed for high-levels of standards-based learning to occur, professional/student standards (such as the ISTE NETS standards for students, teachers and administrators http://www.iste.org) are not enough. Leaders must understand that their roles require sustained efforts; and they must have tools and resources available that both administrators and teachers need in order to have high-performing schools. Resources such as ASCD's SmartBrief Special Reports (Leadership: Part I and Part II) provide insights and collections of resources designed to help administrators and teachers perform their jobs more effectively.
The ISTE technology standards for administrators (and the Kentucky Administrator Technology Standard) emphasize the following areas of focus for administrators: Leadership and Vision Learning and Teaching Productivity and Professional Practice Support, Management, and Operations Assessment and Evaluation Social, Legal, and Ethical Issues.
The regional education labs provide many best practice resources for learning and teaching. One collection of these tools can be found from North Central Region Technology Education Consortium (NCRTEC) Teaching and Learning Resources. Future "In Your Classroom" features and resources on the KATE web page will provide additional information and resources on these and other teaching and learning practices. Links are provided in the resource collection for the remaining indicators of this standard.
