Duke Ellington (April 29, 1899 - May 24, 1974)
Edward Kennedy "Duke" Ellington was born in Washington, D.C. in 1899 and died in New York City in 1974. "Ellington started as a pool hall piano player and grew to become one of the great figures in American jazz. Ellington was one of the first to use classical themes in jazz, and is still considered one of the most innovative composers in jazz history. At the height of his career Ellington toured the world with his orchestra, and composed such standards as Mood Indigo and In A Sentimental Mood." -- http://www.answers.com/topic/duke-ellington
