Library Media

Dr. Johan Koren, Coordinator

Library media at Murray State University is a graduate-only post-master's program in education for libraries and library media. Courses available through the program may be applied in many contexts, including continuing education for librarians in all kinds of libraries, and for teachers.

The primary goal of the Library Media Program is to prepare graduate students for service as certified school library media specialists, grades P-12, in compliance with the American Library Association/American Association of School Librarians/NCATE Standards for Initial Programs for School Library Media Specialist Preparation (approved by NCATE March 5, 2003).

The program consists of a minimum of three hours of graduate credit in professional education and 27 credit hours in the specialization field of library media, including a supervised practicum. With a previous Rank II classification (Master's Degree or Fifth Year Program) and a teaching certificate, this program will lead to certification as School Media Librarian in the state of Kentucky after the successful completion of the PRAXIS II Specialty Examination (0310).

New applicants are encouraged during their first year to participate in a practicum course lasting for 50 hours (earning 1 credit hour), designed to allow the candidate to demonstrate competencies in administration and organization of school library media programs. The remaining 2 credit hours of the practicum will be taken toward the middle and at the end of the student's program. Alternatively, the student may take all 3 credit hours as a culminating practicum experience. Three one week practicum periods are required for the fulfillment of the state of Kentucky's Recruitment plan for position of school media librarian.
