MSU Representatives Attend International Conference on Education

The East West Council for Education, Asia Pacific Research Institute of Peking University, St. Mary’s College of California: School of Education, and the University of Louisville’s Center for Sustainable Urban Neighborhoods co-sponsored the Fourth Annual Hawaii International Conference on Education Jan. 6-9. Several representatives from Murray State University attended.

The conference was held for professionals involved in various disciplines in education to assemble and interact with one another. The conference provided a multitude of cross-disciplinary workshops in elementary education, educational policy and leadership, educational administration, educational technology, mathematics education, and many other areas. There were more than 1,250 attendees from 40 countries.

Murray State University’s Kentucky Center for School Safety Post Secondary Director Karen McCuiston presented a session on the “Web-Based Emergency / Crisis Management Guide for Schools.” This guide was developed by the Kentucky Community Crisis Response Board and was tailored to school systems by the Kentucky Center for School Safety. The guide provides schools with the elements necessary to incorporate safety procedures and precautions into the school routine to promote a safe and orderly learning environment for students and teachers.

The conference provided KCSS with the opportunity to network with individuals in other disciplines and from other countries and provided an outlet for future collaborative projects. KCSS plans to team with teachers and administrators from Dunman High School in Singapore in an effort to incorporate school safety concepts into their schools.

Other Murray State University representatives who attended the conference include Dr. Jo Robertson, Dr. Nancy Lovett and Ms. Cheryl Dunn who presented a paper entitled “Early Childhood Professional Development: Utilizing Research-Based Practices in Service Delivery.” Dr. Dwight Holliday and Dr. Dana Harader co-wrote a paper on “Enhancing the Classroom Management Skills of Rural Educators.” The paper was presented by Dr. Holliday.
