TQI Holds Summer Institutes

Murray State University’s Teacher Quality Institute (TQI) recently finished its 2005 Summer Institutes. This year eight were held in the months of June and July for elementary through high school public school teachers. There were 158 teachers from 31 school districts involved.

The institutes, which were provided at no cost to the teachers, were designed to help improve student achievement by improving teachers’ content knowledge and teaching skills. Teachers also received graduate credit from Murray State University for their work. Teachers chose from the following this year: Writing Plays to Enrich Instruction in All Content Area; Spanish for Educators; Mathematics Content and Teaching Strategies for Teachers; Inquiry Based Science: The GLOBE Program; Robotics for Teachers; An Institute for Teachers in Mexico; Tiered Mentoring Math and Science Workshop; and Teaching Middle School Math or Science.

The workshop format of five 8-hour days proved beneficial for teachers. TQI received positive feedback from teachers attending the institutes. TQI director W.A. Franklin said, “The Summer Institutes are a marvelous experience. I’ve been working with similar activities for 40 years and have never seen any that work better.”
