Student Ambassadors Assist with Recruitment
The College of Education Student Ambassadors are a group of students that meet with prospective students and assist with recruitment activities. Dr. Lee Kem, Director of the COE Undergraduate Advising Center, formed the group after noticing that the parents preferred talking with her, but the students preferred to talk with her student workers.
Student Ambassadors work with prospective students on several different levels. Ambassadors meet with prospective students and assist with recruitment activities such as Junior Jam and Honors Weekend. The Ambassadors travel to high schools in the region and perform skits about the differences between high school and college. They also serve as small group facilitators in Freshman Orientation and follow up with students during the semester after their orientation.
Before the beginning of the fall semester, ambassadors participate in an in-depth training session. Areas included in the training are confidentiality guidelines, advising procedures, conducting tours of Alexander Hall, and dealing with questions, to name a few. The Student Ambassador group is well-recognized within the College of Education and throughout the campus. Other academic colleges within MSU have modeled the program. Murray State University recognizes this group as an excellent recruitment and retention tool. The Student Ambassador program enhances and extends the advising process, helping to ensure success for freshmen at Murray State University.
Currently, the College of Education has 16 Student Ambassadors. The 2004 – 2005 ambassadors are April Berry, Melody Southard, Tamyra Coleman, Amber Shelton, Laura Petway, Kayla Olive, Katie Oller, Brian Collier, Casey Humkey, Megan Jones, Steven Brown, Melissa Bridges, Lauren Parrish, Carolyn Cooper, Jennifer Jatczak, and Heath Cates.
