College of Education - Phi Delta Kappa 2005 Outstanding Teacher Panel Presentation

The 2005 Kentucky Outstanding Teachers visited Murray State University to present a panel presentation to student teachers on Tuesday, October 18, 2005. Dr. Jacqueline Hansen, Assistant Professor of Elementary Education, and Jeanie Robertson, Student Teaching Coordinator in Teacher Education Services, coordinated the event. The College of Education and Phi Delta Kappa co-sponsored the panel presentation. Hansen also served as facilitator for the panel presentation.

2005 marks the tenth year the Kentucky Outstanding Teacher Awards have been presented by the College of Education at Murray State University. These awards were created to recognize K-12 educators for their excellence in teaching. In April of this year, a committee selected this year’s winners from nominations received from across the state. These exemplary educators were initially honored in conjunction with the Sparks Lecture Series last June: Marcy Michelle Hancock (West Broadway Elementary in Madisonville), Marianne Scott (Calloway County Middle School), and Meg Tolley (Livingston Central High School). Because Meg Tolley had other professional commitments, Debra Burgess, the 2004 Outstanding High School Teacher from Murray High School, participated in her place.

The recipients were chosen based on their demonstrated excellence in teaching, contributions to parental involvement in learning, and commitment to their schools’ excellence. At the beginning of the panel presentation, Mrs. Hancock shared her instructional expertise, Mrs. Scott shared ways she’s demonstrated commitment to her school’s excellence, and Mrs. Burgess described strategies to actively involve parents in their children’s education. Then, because an inherent part of being an exemplary educator is effective classroom management, each teacher presented her top five classroom management tips. The presentation ended with a question and answer session. This presentation provided valuable information to student teachers who will be going into the classroom and having classes of their own in the near future. These outstanding teachers’ hard work, dedication, and commitment to excellence in education served as an inspiration for all of the future educators!
