The National Academic Advising Association was chartered as a non-profit organization in 1979 to promote quality academic advising and professional development of its membership to ensure the educational development of students. Since that beginning, NACADA has grown to almost 8,000 members consisting of faculty members, professional advisors, administrators, counselors, and others in academic and student affairs concerned with the intellectual, personal, and vocational needs of students. In addition, NACADA is the representative and advocate of academic advising and those providing that service to higher education.
NACADA hosts an annual national conference each fall that attracts over 2,000 attendees, as well as 10 regional conferences, and intensive study of advising through Administrators’ and Assessment Institutes, a Faculty Advising Seminar, and an Academic Advising Summer Institute held annually. NACADA publishes a scholarly journal, a quarterly newsletter, and occasional special publications and monographs. NACADA offers an advising training video, manages a consultants bureau, offers member career services, funds research grants, sponsors an awards program, grants scholarships, and supports commissions to address important academic advising issues. Most of all, NACADA provides a network and professional identity for the thousands of faulty, full-time advisors, and administrators whose responsibilities include academic advising.
