Minority Recruitment in the College of Education
The College of Education at Murray State University has opportunities available to ease the shortage of minorities in education.
The Minority Educator Recruitment and Retention Scholarship is a $5000 per year scholarship for minority residents of Kentucky, designed to get more minority students into the teaching profession. The Kentucky Department of Education grant is offered through the Teacher Quality Institute at Murray State University. Students applying for the scholarship must maintain a 2.5 grade point average and declare education as their major area of study. The scholarship is for undergraduate students, as well as graduate students who wish to go back to college to get their certification. It is renewable each year as long as the student meets the requirements.
For more information on the scholarship, contact Raymond Sims, coordinator, at 270-809-2682 or 2090 or raymond.sims@coe.murraystate.edu.
The African-American Administrator Recruitment Program (AAARP) was established to recruit Kentucky African-American teachers to become school administrators. Areas of need include K-12 building principals, Guidance Counselors, Supervisors of Instruction, Directors of Pupil Personnel, and School Superintendents. To be eligible to participate in AAARP, a student must be an African-American resident of Kentucky, hold a valid Kentucky teaching certificate, be employed by a participating Kentucky public school district, and be recommended for the program by a participating school district. The student must also meet all requirements for admission to the MSU graduate program in the licensure area of interest.
