EDU 665 – Field Experiences in Environmental Education
Please be patient... Pictures LoadingEDU 665, better known as “Summer Institute,” is a weeklong residential course conducted jointly with Western Kentucky University’s Center for Math, Science, and Environmental Education. The bulk of the course takes place at Brandon Spring Group Camp in Land Between the Lakes. There are some day trips to other sites within Land Between the Lakes that help provide additional learning experiences.
This course focuses on the interdisciplinary nature of EE and methods of teaching EE to diverse students. The concepts of ecology are stressed throughout the week through various studies of systems such as trees, wetlands, and streams. The Kentucky Council on Post-Secondary Education has made this experience possible since 1992. In the past, teachers have left this course with a stipend for attending and large supply of resources including, but not limited to classroom sets of bug boxes, hand lenses, tree finders, and pond guides. They have also taken home backpacks, journals, and curriculum guides like Project WET, Project Learning Tree, and WWF’s Biodiversity Basics. This weeklong experience provides a plethora of resources to incorporate in your everyday teaching no matter what subject or grade level.
